Any kind of exercise without proper support will lead to a sagging chest – and because running involves an up and down action it means the bust has to cope with a lot of movement. When running, unsupported boobs can bounce by as much as 20cm, and they also move from side to side.
This causes the breasts’ main support system, the Cooper’s ligaments, to be put under stress leading to them being stretched.
Once these ligaments are stretched they never recover and that’s what causes the chest to droop. A study also reveals that the breasts are affected by all styles of running. According to researchers at the University of Portsmouth, the bust moves as much during slow jogging as when sprinting, and off-road running can cause greater sideways swing.
All this advice does not only apply to larger-chested ladies. Even women with smaller busts will be affected by so-called “Cooper’s droop”. Pamela Andrews, a sports injury specialist and assistant manager of Run 4 It’s Bothwell Street branch in Glasgow, says: “Whether you measure a 34A or a 36E, the supporting ligaments are under just as much strain. “That’s why sports bras are made to fit all sizes of bust.”
In fact these days the female runner is spoilt for choice when it comes to bras. There are at least 20 different brands and a whole host of shapes and sizes. The most popular makes include Shock Absorber, Sportjock, Triumph and Enell. Now that you’re convinced of the merits of a sports bra, here are our top tips for buying the right one for you.
Nothing but sports
While an Australian study revealed that a good sports bra will reduce vertical bounce by half that of a bare chest, tests on crop tops and fashion bras showed they offer only half the support of sports bras.
Size matters
It’s essential that you buy the right size. Most good sports shops can advise of fit when you try on the bra, but make sure you take a selection of brands and sizes into the changing room. Try them all on and then only buy the one that offers the best support all round the chest.
Mirror test
When trying on a new sports bra jump up and down a few times in front of the mirror. It might seem a little silly but it will reveal any movement. The best bras result in the least movement.
Attention to detail
Assess the clips and straps on various sports bras. A side fastening bra is a great idea if you also plan to use the bra for workouts such as circuits because there’s nothing worse than a clip that digs in every time you do a sit up. Fully adjustable straps are also essential.
Go for high-impact
Most sports bras come in a range of impact levels. Running is one of the highest impact sports so go for the most supporting level.
Fabric fantastic
Running makes you sweat – and sweat can give you a rash or leave you feeling soaked through and chilly. Ensure your chosen sports bra is made from a wick-away material.
Nothing lasts forever
A sports bra will withstand about 12 washes in a washing machine before it starts to lose its supporting qualities. So don’t leave it too long before buying a new one.
Forget the price
Sports bras can be expensive but what price would you put on sagging bosoms? A life time of sports bras will never equal the cost of reconstructive breast surgery.
