At this time of year, the darkness seems to go on and on…and on! OK so we are far from the 3 months of continuous darkness that some places go through, but still – it almost feels that way. Maintaining your running through this period will be hugely beneficial to your health and well-being, but doing so will require some extra motivation and a change in wardrobe! From now until March, brighter is definitely better!
The following four brands will assist you in being bright and bold from head to toe, so no one will miss you out there on the roads…
Saucony for shoes
This year Saucony have gone one step further to ensuring your visibility and have incorporated a fully reflective midsole into some of their most loved shoes. The shoes in Saucony’s Reflex Series successfully catch passing lights and the attention of pedestrians, whilst still giving you the cushioning and comfort you need.
The models they have adapted to a winter-friendly mode are the Ride 9, the Zealot ISO² and the Hurricane ISO² so no matter what type of shoe you love – there’s one for you in the Reflex Series. The Ride 9 comes in at £120 and is a fantastic all round neutral shoe; light enough to run fast in, whilst cushioned enough to go the distance.
Need a bit of added stability? No problem – the Hurricane ISO² at £140 will offer you maximum cushioning along with the perfect fit from the ISO upper. When you combine this with the responsive Everun cushioning running really feels effortless! The Zealot ISO², £125, also features the same style of upper but delivers this in a lightweight, fast package that you will love come those faster runs.
Ronhill for clothing
Next on the list is Ronhill and clothing. And going bright is the way forward. The Vizion range features panels of laser dot technology, which ensures maximum visibility and high durability. This has also been paired with reflective strips and LED lights giving you the complete package to ensure you are seen!
The Vizion Radiance Jacket at £99, has all of the above features and incorporates them into a stylish and functional jacket. The Activelite material is lightweight, highly breathable and fully windproof. It has also been treated with a durable, water repellant finish to ensure water repellency in all but the worst conditions.
On top of all this you will also find two LED lights (10 lumens each) included with the jacket, which fit into uniquely designed spaces on the front and rear of the jacket.
The Vizion Radiance Tight (£50), also features the laser dot technology and are made from Ronhill’s powerlite fabric which gives a fantastic fit and ensures warmth yet breathability. There’s a convenient pocket in the back for any keys/valuables and lock down zips around the ankles to ensure they stay in place.
Petzl for lighting
A good headtorch is essential to winter training and will allow you to navigate the darkness with confidence and ease. Petzl are the leaders in lighting technology and there are a whole host of options to choose from.
An entry level model such as the Petzl Tikka+ (£45) will offer you constant lighting and 160 lumens. Powered by batteries, the constant lighting will allow full power availability up until the last moment. In a lightweight, comfortable package.
A more advanced option would be the Petzl Reactik, £65 and will include reactive lighting. This is an intelligent sensor that adjusts the power output of the headtorch depending on the amount of light around you. This allows the rechargeable batteries to be conserved and delivers optimum performance.
If you are in pitch darkness the headtorch will deliver the full 220 lumens, however if there are some streetlights around then it will dim the lighting to save power.
Nathan for accessories
Finally, just to ensure you definitely aren’t missed out there, Nathan has a selection of lightweight, functional accessories that you can add to any outfit to brighten up those dark nights.
At £10, the Strobe will add 6 lumens to your brightness rating and can be clipped to shoes, clothing or backpacks. The strobe has three different modes and will give you up to 100 hours of burn time, after which you can simply replace the standard coin style battery.
2) The Light Spur
Adding a Light Spur to a pair of shoes will add a powerful light source that clips on with ease. The Light Spur is fully waterproof and will last 100 hours before needing to replace the batteries. That’s a lot of winter miles for £15!
3) The Light Bender
A lightweight (magic) LED band that wraps around your arm for 360-degree visibility. It is sweat proof, waterproof so you can run for longer in any weather and is powered by a replaceable watch battery for 100 hours of illumination. It has multiple settings for blinking or steady steam light.
Enjoy your winter training this year. Remember to be seen and be safe!!
