Nike Winter Running Shoes

When the sunny days have packed up for winter we all crack out the winter running gear and the waterproofs, but how many of us switch up our shoe rotation in the same way? Does your rotation include a winter running shoe?

In the same way a pair of Tempo NEXT%s make higher intensity training miles tick by a little more forgivingly, and a pair of Invincibles allow you to effortlessly eat up your daily mileage, a good pair of winter running shoes can go a long way to mitigating the risks of running in rainy and colder conditions. Winter running presents problems, and winter running shoes are part of the solution.

Fortunately, Nike have removed the need to completely revamp your shoe rotation. They're offering ready to rumble winterised offerings of some of their most popular models.

Best Nike running shoes for winter

Why create a completely new shoe when you could just update a classic? Nike running shoes have long benefitted from trickledown tech from their top-end racing shoes, with their premium daily running shoes often representing a great running experience at a really competitive price. Nike's winter running shoe range is no exception to this.

Nike have added state-of-the-art technologies to the Pegasus and Pegasus Trail to create some excellent winter running shoe options.

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 39 Shield

The standard version of the Pegasus 39 is something of a Swiss Army shoe. It gives a plush, forgiving ride at slower speeds, but the React foam and Zoom Air units give great energy return when asked to put on a turn of pace.

With the Shield version you get the same high performing, highly versatile road shoe, but with the advantage of dry feet and good grip when it's wet and cold. Most winter running shoes just offer waterproofing, but the Shield is designed to tackle winter from bottom to top.

What does the Shield version do differently?

The upper

The upper works to keep feet warm and dry in two ways. Firstly, a water-repellent treatment coupled with sealed seams and a gusseted tongue keep water from getting inside the shoe, meanwhile Aeroloft technology in the knit upper provides insulation without causing overheating.

The outsole

The Storm-Tread rubber outsole uses a textured design inspired by winter tyres. Micro-grooves provide extra grip on the asphalt while multidirectional shapes allow the outsole to shed water. This increases overall surface contact with the pavement.

This Nike running shoe is dialled into the needs of wet-weather road running like no other option on the market.

React Pegasus Trail 4

The Nike React Pegasus Trail 4 is the burlier sibling of the perennial workhorse with wings: the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 39. Think of it as the Peg you can turn to for the dirty work. It's the shoe of choice for those runs where you may find yourself encountering unexpected terrain due to bad weather, or just because you felt lucky and experimented with your route mid-run.

The Trail version is still boasting a full React midsole, but on a broader, more substantial platform. Instead of Zoom Air units, it has a short lug pattern that can give a little more grip on looser surfaces. So while it might not specifically be a winter running shoe, its versatility makes it a strong year-round option.

React Pegasus Trail 4 Gore-Tex

The Gore-Tex version does exactly what it says on the tin. It makes the highly versatile Pegasus Trail 4 even more versatile, and even more suitable as a winter running shoe. The full Gore-Tex Invisible Fit upper provides unrivalled waterproofing without compromising on fit and feel. A gaiter at the ankle collar shores up the design by stopping debris and dirt getting inside.
