When it comes to running in the winter season, we automatically change to warmer clothing to protect ourselves from the weather. But what about our running shoes? Although not an obvious choice, switching to winter-specific running shoes can be a real game-changer, in the face of difficult weather and cold conditions outside. Winter running shoes are the perfect choice if you are concerned about getting your feet wet or losing your grip on wet roads.
There are a variety of running shoes specifically designed to deliver weather protection and grip for the cold and wet season. Winterised running shoes from the Nike range feature neat technologies designed to allow runners to stick to their favourite outdoor routes, whatever the weather.
Weatherproof Nike running shoes
Why create a completely new shoe when you could just update the classics? Nike have added state-of-the-art technologies to a couple of their most popular running shoes to create weatherproof options.
The standard version of the Pegasus is a perfect training shoe for running at a mixture of intensities. With the Shield version, you’ll be able to do the same, with the advantage of keeping your feet dry and comfortable (and your mind on the run) when it’s wet and cold outside.
What’s different in the Pegasus 37 Shield?
The upper is coated with a durable water repellent treatment, keeping your feet dryer in wet weather. The design features a 1/2-length weatherised shroud that’s lightweight and breathable but helps keep the forefoot dry. This is ideal for stopping the foot from getting wet after running through a puddle.
The texture of the tread in the Shield edition is inspired by all-winter tires. Named Storm-Tread,it features micro grooves to stick to road surfaces and multidirectional shapes to shed water, so the tread stays in contact with the ground. This will deliver incredible grip on slick streets.
The React Miler Shield is a great option if you seek more protection from winter elements and more grip on wet roads, much like the Air Zoom Pegasus 37 Shield. This is a stability shoe that offers additional support for excessive pronation.
It is designed to provide a ‘jacket’ for the foot and is slightly different to the Pegasus 37 Shield upper. A light and breathable 3/4-length shroud covers the laces and provides protection from the wet. Inspired by performance outerwear, the shroud helps repel water to keep the foot dry. The upper is also coated with a durable water repellent treatment to help water ‘bead’ off the material.
The outsole features the Storm-Tread technology, same as the one found in the Pegasus 37 Shield. Your wet miles won’t be a problem anymore!
Waterproof Nike running shoes
Nike have a pretty comprehensive range of trail running shoes that can be more suitable for winter running. Hybrid trail running shoes will offer better traction on wet roads and on muddy trails, while providing great cushioning. They tend to be designed with improved material on the upper to increase water drainage, but not a lot of models will offer a full waterproof protection.
The Nike Pegasus Trail 2 is a new design and is very different from its predecessor, the Pegasus 36 Trail. Taking inspiration from the popular road model, the Air Zoom Pegasus 37, it is a grippy door-to-trail shoe that’s suitable for a mixture of road and trail running. It’s your perfect all round shoe.
The new Gore-Tex option adds new levels of protection to the standard Pegasus Trail 2 option. The upper is made using Gore-Tex Invisible Fit technology, providing full waterproof protection without affecting the fit or feel of the shoe. Made with quick-drying material, you can train everyday without waiting for your wet shoes to dry!
The outsole features a rubberthat has a bike tire inspired look. Nubs provide traction and a smooth feeling underfoot on a mixture of surfaces, including road. More traction at the heel and toe helps improve uphill and downhill running.
Don’t stop at weather-proofing your feet! Nike’s winter clothing collection is designed to help you ‘run fearless through bad weather’ and we have a great selection for you to choose from. Between the morning and evening commutes, you have a lot you want to achieve. The Men’s Run Division collection balances performance with design for your route.
