The Brooks Ghost Trail running shoes are designed to handle mixed-terrain and door-to-trail runs across a wide range of distances and paces. We previously tested and reviewed the Brooks Ghost 17, highlighting why it remains a staple daily trainer and one of the most balanced road running shoes available.
How does the Ghost Trail fit, and what is the experience of running in them? In what ways do they differ from the standard road model? Continue reading to understand why the Ghost Trail represents an excellent choice for mixed-terrain running.
Brooks kindly sent us a pair of the Ghost Trail to test out. We hope you find this review helpful.
How do the Ghost Trail compare to the Ghost 17?
The Ghost Trail is essentially a hybrid version of the Ghost, optimised for uneven and mixed surfaces. Keep reading — the Ghost Trail features several technical changes that make it suitable for varied terrain. Although the two models appear similar, these differences create a noticeably distinct ride experience. We will explore this ride feel in the next section.
Both models use the same nitrogen-infused DNA Loft v3 midsole foam, delivering a blend of protective cushioning and resilience.

From there, the Ghost’s design is reworked in the Ghost Trail to better cope with changing ground conditions. The outsole moves from the flat, road-specific pattern of the Ghost 17 to 3 mm lugs. Made from TrailTack Green Rubber it offers better grip on compact dirt, park paths and groomed trails, yet still keeping transitions smooth on pavement.

The 8 mm drop and slightly higher forefoot stack provide a stable, grounded platform on uneven surfaces.
The Ghost Trail uses an engineered double-jacquard air mesh, reinforced with 3D-printed overlays and a mudguard at the toe for durability.
Forefoot strikers may notice the extra 1 mm of foam under the forefoot compared with the Ghost 17.
How do the Ghost Trail fit?
The first step in the Ghost Trail felt different from the Ghost 17. While the toe box in the latter is accommodating, the toe box in the Ghost Trail (in the same size) felt roomier - which is something I personally like. The overall fit felt secure with less awareness of having the shoe on than the Ghost 17.
How do the Ghost Trail feel to run in?
The Brooks Ghost Trail continues the “Ghost feel” tradition, bringing the balanced ride of the road model off-road.
For mid- to forefoot strikers like me, the extra 1 mm of forefoot foam adds a subtle but noticeable sense of protection.
Compared with the Ghost 17, the Ghost Trail felt slightly more enjoyable to run in — even on pavements — thanks to a fit and cushioning that, while not necessarily plusher, feels more natural. It’s worth noting that I’m used to running in shoes with an 8 mm drop or less, and I particularly enjoy this kind of profile. If you love the Ghost 17, you should enjoy the Ghost Trail.

Summary
In conclusion, the Ghost Trail suits a wide range of uses and conditions. Many runners may benefit from adding a pair to their rotation during autumn and winter, even without frequent off-road runs.
-
On slicker pavements or leaf-covered paths, the grippier outsole offers extra confidence and stability when conditions are unpredictable.
-
The cushioning remains protective on pavement, making the shoe just as suitable for everyday road miles as it is for mixed-terrain runs.
-
If you can only pack one shoe for a weekend away that includes both runs and walks over varied surfaces, the Ghost Trail is an ideal choice.
