Mizuno Wave Rider 30 Running Shoes Review - 30 Years Of Brilliance Celebrated

The Mizuno Wave Rider is one of road running's true icons, yet we could say it doesn’t receive the same level of attention as some of its competitors despite its long-standing reputation. The Wave Rider 30 celebrates three decades of this landmark model and launches with a special colourway inspired by the original Wave Rider 1 to commemorate the milestone.

Mizuno kindly provided us with a pair of the Wave Rider 30 Disclosure for testing ahead of its official launch. The Wave Rider 30 arrives with several notable updates that alter the ride compared with previous versions. Read on to see why you shouldn't overlook the latest chapter in the Wave Rider story.

Mizuno Wave Rider 30 | What’s new?

There are several notable updates in the midsole. First of all, while the previous version used Enerzy NXT above and below the Wave Plate, the Wave Rider 30 retains the nitrogen-infused Enerzy NXT only in the top layer. The lower layer now uses a firmer compound, helping to create a more stable platform without sacrificing comfort.

This change in the bottom layer is likely a response to the significantly increased stack height found in the Wave Rider 30. Compared with the Wave Rider 29, forefoot stack height has increased by 6mm, while the heel gains an additional 4mm of cushioning.

Moreover, the heel-to-toe drop has been reduced from 10mm to 8mm. These updates in the Wave Rider 30 are in line with what we currently see in modern daily trainers.

Another update is the full-length Wave Plate, which is now integrated and hidden within the midsole rather than being visibly exposed. The Wave Plate remains the defining feature of the Wave Rider franchise, designed to solve the challenge of combining cushioning and stability by dispersing impact forces efficiently while helping to guide the foot through the gait cycle.

Mizuno Wave Rider 30 | Our testing feedback

The Wave Rider 30 felt excellent to run in. Having tested several previous versions, I’ve always found the Wave Rider line to sit on the firmer end of the spectrum. While still comfortable, earlier models leaned more toward a firm, snappy ride, helped by a lower forefoot stack that kept you closer to the ground.

This version changes that feel noticeably. The foam is plusher, and the added stack under the forefoot is especially apparent for me as a mid-to-forefoot striker.

Importantly, it still retains the responsive, propulsive feel that has long defined the Wave Rider franchise, but now with a more cushioned, bouncy character.

My first run in them was a pyramid session, which proved ideal for testing the shoe through different gears. The reps ranged from 4 minutes down to 1 minute, decreasing by 1 minute before building back up to 4 minutes, with pace targets from 3:50 min/km down to 3:30 min/km. I felt controlled throughout, and the shoes performed really well across all intervals.

If I were to hold the faster paces for longer efforts, I’d probably opt for a shoe with a more aggressive rocker geometry, but I was impressed by how easy and natural these felt to run in.

Fit-wise, Mizuno running shoes tend to run on the generous side, with an accommodating toe box and overall width, and that remains true here. The padded collar around the ankle feels comfortable, though for faster-paced runs I personally prefer using a runner’s lock lacing technique to improve overall lockdown.

Why choose the Wave Rider 30?

Overall, the Wave Rider 30 feels like a well-judged evolution of a long-standing classic. It’s noticeably more cushioned and modern underfoot than previous versions, with the added stack and updated midsole giving it a smoother, more protective ride, while still retaining the stability and natural responsiveness the Wave Rider is known for. It may have shifted slightly away from the firmer, lower-to-the-ground feel of older models, but in doing so it becomes a more versatile daily trainer that feels easy to run in across a wide range of paces.
