New Balance Rebel v5 VS SC Rebel | Experience comparison

Taking it back to our road shoe categories, the Rebel v5 sits within our Connected Experience category, while the SC Rebel sits within our Enhanced Energy category.

Put simply, the Rebel v5 should deliver a light, responsive and connected ride, while the SC Rebel offers a more cushioned, propulsive experience with more of a race-day feel.

FULL REBEL V5 REVIEW

The SC Rebel has a significantly higher stack, with 36mm of cushioning at the forefoot and 40mm at the heel compared with 29mm and 35mm in the Rebel v5. Yet despite carrying more foam, the SC Rebel is actually lighter.

For us, that's one of the most impressive aspects of the SC Rebel. You get noticeably more shoe underfoot without additional weight. This is where the Infinion foam really comes into its own. It's exceptionally light, while offering the comfort and energy return you'd expect from a more premium foam.

The other major difference is the full-length propulsion plate. The Rebel v5 has no plate, giving it a more natural and connected feel through the stride. The SC Rebel's plate, combined with its higher stack and Infinion foam, gives the shoe a more purposeful and energetic character when you increase the pace.

That doesn't make the SC Rebel automatically better, though. The Rebel v5 remains the more straightforward choice if you want a lightweight shoe for everyday miles, steady-paced running and occasional tempo work. The SC Rebel makes more sense if you want to push the pace more regularly, whether that's intervals, tempo sessions or longer-distance training and have a shoe that helps you hit your target speed and keep your legs feeling fresher for longer.

New Balance Rebel v5 or SC Rebel | How to pick

From our independent retailer perspective, we’d see the choice between these two models coming down to your training volume, how you like to structure your shoe rotation, and how much propulsion you want from your running shoes.

If you’re marathon or half marathon training for example, or simply building towards higher weekly mileage, both models can play a valuable role. The Rebel v5 is the more versatile option, making it well suited to steady runs, tempo sessions and general training. The SC Rebel, meanwhile, really comes into its own for longer sessions, particularly when you’re running at goal race pace. As mileage increases and fatigue builds, its additional cushioning and propulsion can help your legs feel fresher and make it easier to maintain your target pace.

If you rotate your running shoes, we’d see the Rebel v5 as a great option for steady-paced and some faster training, while the SC Rebel can be saved for longer interval or tempo sessions where you want that extra level of protection and propulsion.

If you prefer to use one pair for most of your training, the Rebel v5 arguably offers great versatility across different paces and distances. However, if your priority is performance and you want more assistance as the pace and distance increase, the SC Rebel will be an ideal choice.
