The HOKA Challenger ATR is widely regarded as one of the best door-to-trail running shoes. Why? Firstly, it provides great cushioning for running on hard surfaces, such as the pavements and compact trails. Secondly, the outsole is built to increase traction on uneven surfaces and wet ground. It’s fair to say that the HOKA Challenger ATR could be viewed as a Clifton, but with extra grip. If you have to navigate some sections of road, on your way to and from the trails, the Challenger is a great option. HOKA have redesigned the 7th edition of the Challenger ATR from the outsole up. A new outsole rubber is inspired by gravel tires - to provide exceptional grip on the widest variety of terrain. For those who enjoy the technical details, the outsole consists of smaller, more tightly spaced lugs in the centre, and larger more aggressive lugs around the edge. This improves traction on uneven terrain, while also providing excellent durability on hard surfaces. To improve performance on hard ground, it features a softer midsole foam with a higher stack height than before. This is combined with HOKA’s signature Meta Rocker technology to keep you moving forward with less effort, and more comfort. Fear not, the midsole design still adapts to uneven trail terrain. It’s also significantly lighter than before. Finally, a new simplified engineered mesh upper delivers great comfort and support. If you want to slip on your shoes in a hurry, the extended heel tab makes it easier to put your feet in to the shoes. If you’re looking for a versatile trail running shoe that performs on road and trail, check out the HOKA Challenger ATR. After more grip and traction for tougher trails? The Vibram rubber outsole of the HOKA Speedgoat is more likely to keep you running with confidence.
