Brooks kindly sent us a pair of the new Ghost 18 ahead of its release, and we’ve now tested it across more than 50km of training. If you’re considering your first pair of Ghosts or upgrading from an older version, this review covers everything you need to know about the Ghost 18: how it compares with the Ghost 17, details on its refined fit, and where it sits within the wider Ghost line-up.
Brooks Ghost 18 | What’s new?
Our review of the Brooks Ghost 17 highlighted how its updates made the ride feel smoother and more fluid than previous editions. We’re pleased to say the Brooks Ghost 18 carries that same fluid ride forward, featuring the same foam cushioning. The Ghost 18 introduces several fit refinements which, as our testing feedback shows, complement the smooth and consistent experience underfoot.
The key updates in the Ghost 18 are:
-
A new Ortholite X-60 sockliner to improve step-in comfort
-
A new triple jacquard engineered air mesh upper for increased breathability
-
A flat knit tongue for top-of-foot comfort and to help lock the foot in place

Brooks Ghost 18 | Our testing feedback
We tested the Brooks Ghost 18 primarily on easy runs. As mentioned earlier, this latest version uses the same DNA LOFT v3 midsole as the Brooks Ghost 17, so it retains the smooth, fluid ride that stood out in our previous review.
While the updates aren’t dramatic, we did notice a few subtle refinements that further improve the overall experience. The new Ortholite X-60 sockliner adds a touch more softness underfoot - not enough to change the character of the shoe, but enough to make step-in feel slightly more cushioned and spongier. That plush sensation carries into the run without overpowering the balanced feel of the DNA LOFT v3 midsole, which otherwise remains very familiar.
The flatter tongue design is another welcome tweak. Although the plusher tongue on the Ghost 17 never caused issues, the updated construction creates a more comfortable and secure lockdown around the ankle. Overall, the fit of the Ghost 18 feels snug and supportive, while still disappearing nicely on foot.
Taken together, the Ghost 18 keeps the balanced, dependable ride we’ve come to expect from the Ghost range, while the small refinements continue to make it one of the strongest options for everyday training miles - whether that’s shorter easy runs, longer efforts, or steady-paced sessions.
Brooks Ghost 18 | The Ghost line-up
The Ghost range has expanded beyond the standard version. While the Brooks Ghost 18 remains the versatile, balanced option at the centre of the line-up, the surrounding models each take the Ghost formula in slightly different directions.
Ghost Max
For the avoidance of doubt, the Brooks Ghost Max 3 is not simply a max-cushioned version of the Ghost, even if the name might suggest that. Instead, it’s a distinct model built around a high-stack midsole, broad platform, and GlideRoll rocker geometry.
The thick layer of nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 cushioning delivers a soft and protective ride, while the rocker helps smoothly assist heel-to-toe transitions. Compared to the standard Ghost, the Ghost Max feels more cushioned, more guided, and naturally more stable thanks to its wide base.
It’s best suited to slower-paced runs, recovery miles, and runners looking for extra comfort and support without moving into a traditional stability shoe.
Ghost Trail
For runners heading off-road, the Brooks Ghost Trail takes the Ghost platform onto light trails and mixed terrain. It keeps the approachable, comfortable feel of the road version but adds extra grip and protection for gravel paths, parks, and non-technical trails. Compared to dedicated trail shoes, the Ghost Trail remains relatively road-friendly, making it a good option for runners who regularly move between tarmac and easier off-road routes.

Adrenaline GTS
The Brooks Ghost 18 and Brooks Adrenaline GTS both use nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 cushioning, delivering the smooth and balanced ride the Ghost range is known for across a variety of paces. The key difference is the Adrenaline GTS’s inclusion of GuideRails technology. Choose the Adrenaline GTS if you need extra stability and support. The holistic support from the GuideRails is designed to step in only when needed, helping guide the feet and knees more naturally during the run.
